Minnesota refugee arrivals fall to record lows, reshaping decades-old resettlement system

New data from the Minnesota Department of Human Services shows just 111 refugees have arrived in Minnesota so far this fiscal year — and all of them are white Afrikaners from South Africa.
Context,
For more than four decades, Minnesota has been one of the country’s leading refugee resettlement states for people fleeing war, persecution and humanitarian crises. On average, about 2,000 to 3,000 refugees arrived in the state each year over the previous 45 years.
Doing the math and splitting the difference, 2,500 refugees/year for 45 years totals 112,500. For additional context, that figure approaches the total population of the city of Rochester, MN, the state’s third-largest municipality.

You can see from the chart that the pace of arrivals also slowed during Trump’s first term. Consulting the interactive map, the top four nations, Somalia at over 8,200, “Burma” at 5,600, Ethiopia at almost 1,400, and the Congo at more than 1,000, collectively represent the vast majority (76 percent) of the arrivals during this period.
As we’ve noted in years past, foreign arrivals is one of the few sources of population growth for Minnesota.
Minnesota generally records positive net migration numbers because arrivals from abroad more than offset those residents leaving for elsewhere in the United States.
MPR reports,
The Minnesota Council of Churches decided not to participate in the federal program resettling Afrikaners.
The money quote,
That was the right moral decision, if you ask me. However, it did have pretty significant financial costs for us as an organization, and we lost millions of dollars in federal funding.
“Moral decision.” Got it. From that quote I will assume that when the demographics of new arrivals shifts back to historic trends, the Council will eagerly accept your tax dollars, again.
MPR notes that other charities are assisting the arriving South Africans.
