Balancing the Budget
As the legislative session comes to a close, I want to take a moment to reflect on what we’ve accomplished. This session demanded tough decisions, long hours, and a willingness to push back on the idea that raising taxes is the only way to solve problems. That mindset has dominated state government for too long, and it places all too much of the burden back on hardworking taxpayers.
Minnesotans are already stretched thin due to inflation and rising costs. The last thing you need is more money taken out of your paycheck to fund a government that refuses to prioritize. That’s why I’m proud to highlight the work that we did to right size our state budget, without raising taxes. Instead of asking families and businesses to sacrifice more, we put in the work to bring fiscal discipline back to the Capitol.
That meant going line by line through spending, cutting back where we needed to, and demanding accountability from every corner of state government. We made it clear: the answer to every challenge cannot be to grow government. Sometimes the answer is to stop, look around, and ask why we’re spending so much in the first place — and whether those dollars are actually reaching the people they’re intended to help.
One of the biggest threats to that goal has been fraud. Over the last few years, we’ve seen a disturbing pattern of public funds being misused or stolen. Dollars meant for children, seniors, and struggling families have too often ended up in the wrong hands. That’s unacceptable. This session, we passed real reforms to fix it and we’re pushing for more reforms this week. We improved oversight, tightened eligibility requirements, and gave our state agencies more tools to stop fraud before it happens. These are major steps toward rebuilding trust and protecting the integrity of our public programs.
I am grateful for the work of legislators on both sides of the aisle on these critical issues during this session. It took focus, discipline, and a willingness to do the hard work behind the scenes. We didn’t take the easy route. We didn’t punt tough decisions down the road. We showed that it’s possible to govern responsibly, respect taxpayers, and still deliver real results for the people of Minnesota.
I’m proud of what we accomplished this session. We held the line on taxes. We took on waste and fraud. We made sure your money is being used wisely. That’s what Minnesotans expect, and that’s exactly what we continue to deliver.
