A Time for Justice, a Time to Mourn

Minnesota is reeling from a tragedy that has left an indelible mark on our state. The brutal, targeted attack that took the lives of Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark has shaken the foundation of our political community and horrified every Minnesotan who believes in civility, decency, and democracy.

As we grieve this horrific loss, we must also stand in solidarity with Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette, who were also victims of this senseless violence. We pray for their healing and full recovery.

Violence has no place in politics. No disagreement, no grievance, no ideology can justify what has happened. I condemn this evil act in the strongest possible terms and call on every Minnesotan to reject hatred, reject violence, and reject the toxic rhetoric that fuels it.

In the face of this darkness, there is one light we must not overlook—the tireless, relentless work of law enforcement over the weekend. Local, state, and federal officers worked nonstop to locate and apprehend the suspect responsible. Their courage and determination brought this nightmare to an end. They did not rest until the job was done, and we owe them our deep gratitude. Thanks to them, the suspect is in custody and justice may be served.

This is a heartbreaking moment. It is also a time for resolve and reflection. Justice must be served. Healing must begin. And together, we must recommit ourselves to the principles of democracy, decency, and peace.

Melissa, Mark—we will never forget your service or your sacrifice. May your memory be a blessing, and may your legacy continue to shape the state you gave so much to.

Representative Tom Sexton
