Beginning this evening in Stillwater, the state Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) will hold a series of public hearings on Xcel Energy’s electricity rate increase request. MPR News reports,

The public has a chance to weigh in on Xcel Energy’s proposed rate increase at upcoming hearings across the state in September.

If state regulators approve, Xcel’s rates would rise by 9.6 percent this year and another 3.6 percent in 2026, generating a total of about $491 million.

The MPUC hearing schedule includes the following dates,

  • Sept. 15–Stillwater
  • Sept. 16–St. Cloud
  • Sept. 16, 23–internet/phone
  • Sept. 17–St. Paul
  • Sept. 22–Faribault
  • Sept. 23–Edina
  • Sept. 24–Minneapolis
  • Sept. 25–Welch

The Commision has previously indicated that a final decision in the case would be rendered on or before July 31, 2026. In the meantime, the utility is operating under a temporary (refundable) 5.2 percent increase.
