Iris Garcia Salamanca made her first court appearance yesterday on multiple drug distribution charges.

The hearing took place at the federal courthouse in downtown St. Paul and your correspondent was there.
The case involves a major federal drug distribution (meth, heroin, but mostly meth) indictment dating back to March 2020 (Case No. 20-cr-54) and includes eleven (11) defendants. The indictment was partially unsealed in January 2021. In the intervening years, only 8 of the 11 names have been revealed. The name of the lead defendant remains under seal.
Cases are closed on five of the defendants. Four were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 4 to 10 years, via plea deals. One case was dismissed.
Ms. Garcia-Salamanca is the latest to be brought in. Based on a discussion in yesterday’s hearing, I would conclude that Garcia is not an American citizen.
She is being held at the federal lockup in the Sherburne County jail until a detention hearing can be held on Wednesday, July 22.
