Abubakar Swalley Alhassan is pursuing a habeas corpus petition in federal district court in Minnesota attempting to free himself from ICE detention (26-cv-3818).

In his petition, Alhassan, from Ghana, asserts that he is employed as a correctional officer by the state of North Dakota’s Dept. of Corrections. This fact appears to be confirmed by the official North Dakota state database of employees, which includes a match to his name and occupation.

Alhassan asserts that he passed the background check for state hiring. Nonetheless, Alhassan now finds himself in ICE custody and in deportation proceedings.

Friday has been set as the deadline for ICE to respond to the habeas petition. It should make for good reading.
