Earlier this month, it was reported that “Nonfarm jobs” in Minnesota increased by 5,400 between April and May. As I’ve noted before, these estimates of the number of jobs come from the Establishment survey which the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) collects as part of its Current Employment Statistics (CES) survey.
What does this show when we look at the longer term? What does it show when we compare it with the performance of the United States generally?
BLS data show, as seen in Figure 1, that from 2018 to 2025, the number of “Total Nonfarm” jobs in Minnesota grew by 2.1% compared to 6.4% for the United States as a whole; more than triple our state’s rate.

Does this sound like the fifth best state for business to you?
