Tomorrow marks the day many of the public safety measures passed this past legislative session take effect. One of those measures is the 2027 Minnesota Clearance Rate Grant Program which I had a hand in helping to craft and which I provided testimony in support of during the session.

The grant program provides financial assistance to law enforcement, prosecutors, and crime analysists – encouraging them to collaborate to improve the percentage of non-fatal shootings solved. Half of the $905,000 fund is earmarked for the metro area, and half is earmarked for outstate efforts.

Cities around the country that have implemented similar efforts have been successful in dramatically improving the solve rates of their non-fatal shootings, while also affecting a corresponding reduction in retaliatory violence.

Minnesota Public Radio’s Morning Edition host, Cathy Wurzer, invited me on for a few minutes this morning to discuss the program – you can listen to that segment here.
