Recent “disturbances” in the southwest metro have generated much commentary around the nature of the incidents and who, if anyone, should be held accountable.

KSTP-5 reports,

Local leaders working to address youth violence following shooting at Eden Prairie football game.

Details,

Some metro-area Somali leaders are working on a plan for greater safety they expect to release Monday after a shooting outside the Eden Prairie Homecoming game Friday night.

While we await the release of the plan, KSTP informs,

On his Facebook page, Hassan Dhooye, the Imam of the Al-Hikmah Islamic Center, wrote, “Our hearts are with the students and their families, everyone who attended that night.”

KSTP is quoting from this statement on the mosque’s Facebook page, posted by Dhooye, a/k/a Imam Hassan Jama. Hassan Dhooye/Jama concludes his statement with this warning,

I also warn politicians not to use this tragedy for political gain or to label an entire community. This is gun violence and we must call it what it is. Let law enforcement and the justice system do their work.

Justice.

Hassan is in keeping with the state’s Democratic politicians by putting the incident into the “gun violence” box. Typical is this response from Eden Prairie’s Democratic state senator,

I am devastated by the news of gun violence at Eden Prairie’s homecoming game.

Hassan says that “we” must call it gun violence, but investigating police are labeling the incident as something else. From NewsNation,

Investigators eye gang violence in Minnesota homecoming shooting

That’s “gang,” not “gun.”

Authorities investigating a shooting during a homecoming football game in Minnesota are working to determine whether the violence is tied to Somali gangs in the community.

A 17-year-old remains hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, while an 18-year-old was released from the hospital Saturday. Both are reportedly Somali and known to law enforcement.

As for the Imam’s warning, what fate awaits those politicians who he views as exploiting the tragedy? Does he believe this tragedy demands that all current elected official be automatically re-elected, in order to avoid any labelling?

The Imam’s mosque itself has fallen victim to crime in recent months. The website Bring Me the News reported back in July,

Faith leaders say a new mosque and community gathering space in Minneapolis was broken into twice over the last month.

The Al-Hikmah Islamic Center in Minneapolis is located at 2511 East Franklin Avenue in a building that formerly housed Bethany Lutheran Church.

Mosque leaders say the center was broken into twice in July, with the most recent incident happening on July 20.
