Governor Walz’s recent budget forecast reflects an even more serious $5,995,000,000 deficit during the 2028-2029 biennium. Let’s call it what it is…a $6 billion dollar shortfall. This is an unacceptable cliff in the outyears that must be addressed now.
This deficit reflects mismanagement during the last session, in which we saw an $18 billion dollar surplus be frivolously spent. Democrats also passed the burden along to Minnesotans by raising taxes and fees by $10 billion more last session. Our response cannot wait and see. Our small businesses, schools, and families are struggling to carry the weight of the rising costs we face in Minnesota and need relief immediately.
The good news is that there are concrete solutions to help get our state back on track. First and foremost, we must stop the fraud and prioritize fiscal discipline. This means returning to the basics of responsible budgeting: spend less than we take in, avoid one-time spending sprees, and prioritize core services like public safety, education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
Additionally, tax reform could provide relief for Minnesotans who are already struggling with inflation and high living costs. By reducing the tax burden on individuals and businesses, we can stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and ultimately increase revenue through a broader tax base. Lowering taxes for small businesses encourages investment and innovation, which benefits everyone in our communities.
Another practical step forward is to carefully evaluate state programs and services for efficiency and necessity. We need to ensure that every taxpayer dollar is delivering real value. This could mean consolidating redundant programs, reducing administrative overhead, or finding public-private partnerships that deliver services more efficiently.
We also need to focus on long-term economic growth by promoting policies that attract businesses and talent to Minnesota. By investing in workforce development, reducing regulatory hurdles, and supporting industries that create sustainable jobs, we can build a strong and resilient economy that benefits all Minnesotans.
In times like these, it is essential to set aside partisanship and focus on pragmatic, responsible governance. Our goal must be to create a Minnesota where businesses thrive, families prosper, and our communities remain strong. By focusing on common-sense solutions and a disciplined approach to spending, we can overcome this deficit and ensure a brighter future for our state.
