Governor Tim Walz, and other Democrat elected leaders held a joint press conference today at Shiloh Temple in North Minneapolis. The purpose was to continue “whistling” their opposition to the surge in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity that has occurred in the Twin Cities in December.
That surge has resulted in a reported 400 plus arrests of people here illegally. ICE has carried out the arrest details almost exclusively on their own, except for a few instances where local police have responded because of the actions of anti-ICE protestors.
The reason ICE has carried these details out on their own is because nearly every community across the Twin Cities has gone out of it’s way to put out a statement that their law enforcement officers won’t engage in immigration enforcement, and, because many communities and the state have made it clear through policy and practice that they will not share information or cooperate with ICE in matters of civil immigration enforcement. ICE has been forced to go at it alone – or worse, go at it with elected officials responding and being part of the protests disrupting ICE’s efforts.
It’s rich that many of these communities and elected leaders are now complaining that ICE isn’t sharing information with them prior to the arrest details. ICE got their message, and now they are getting ICE’s reply.
Each of the ICE arrests in Minnesota would have occurred without issue, except for the anti-ICE activists who responded for the sole purpose of creating chaos.
To the casual consumer of legacy news, the gaslighting might be difficult to detect. Elected officials gather in bobblehead unison (watch the video) to denounce the chaos that is clearly present around many of the arrests. But the officials, and the legacy media that parrot their narratives, fail to identify the actual source of the chaos. Why? Because the successful opposition to ICE depends upon the successful gaslighting of ICE in the eyes of the public.
True leaders would be tirelessly working with ICE to achieve a meaningful level of cooperation that would assist ICE in doing their legitimate work, while also assisting law-abiding Minnesotans in going about their lives without fear.
Instead, these leaders are ginning up that very fear at every opportunity. How many times does it take for an immigrant to see their Governor or Mayor say they are “right to be fearful” before fear starts to manifest?
Here are a few quotes made by Governor Walz at today’s press conference, a press conference in which he claimed without evidence that ICE was profiling people to arrest based solely on their race. Does he truly believe these statements are calming fears, or is he creating and exploiting fear for his benefit? (Yes, that is a rhetorical question).
“It’s not about keeping people safe, it’s about generating fear.”
“I fully expect and we are preparing for an influx of more agents…”
“I would not put it past this administration to target midnight mass services and arrest folks going to worship. And God knows they’re not going to church.”
Governor Walz
It’s ugly fear mongering stuff, packaged as advocacy. It doesn’t get worse than that.
Thankfully not all our elected officials are gaslighting the situation. On December 16th, twenty House GOP Representatives, including Rep. Lisa Demuth who is running against Governor Walz in 2026, sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem denouncing recent comments the Governor made in his own letter to the Secretary.
The group showed leadership in offering to improve cooperation and coordination between Minnesota and the federal government.
“If there are steps we can take at the state level to support your mission, improve coordination, or push back against political interference, please consider our caucus an ally in that work. Law enforcement should never find themselves at the center of a political tug of war.”
