Another day, another mass shooting in Minneapolis. This morning’s occurred in Dinkytown, the local neighborhood adjacent to the University of Minnesota’s flagship campus. This one caught the attention of local broadcast media:

FOX 9: 3 people shot in Dinkytown early Friday morning

KARE-11: 3 injured in Dinkytown shooting

KSTP-5: Multiple people injured in Dinkytown shooting

WCCO-4: 3 shot in Dinkytown; no suspect info, U of M says

The details included vary by report, but the facts break down as follows:

Who: ?

What: shooting, three hurt

When: 2:15 a.m., Friday, November 1

Where: Dinkytown, 4th St. and 13th Ave.

Why: ?

Par for the course. The all too familiar phrases:

“No arrests have been made at this time.”

“No suspect information is currently available.”

“unknown whether anyone from campus was involved”

And this despite the recently opening of a dedicated “U of M safety center” nearby at the corner of University Ave. and 14 Ave. The U operates a “safety guides” program in Dinkytown Thursdays through Saturdays, but only until 2 a.m.

According to the City of Minneapolis crime dashboard, gunshot wound victims are down slightly from last year across the city. But the headline numbers are less reassuring:

Both assaults and murders are up over their pace from this time last year. This trend persists despite claims that local crime is a “50-year lows.”

As they used to say on Hill Street Blues, “Let’s be careful out there.”
