Ahmed Mohamed Artan is scheduled to become the 21st defendant sentenced in the sprawling Feeding Our Future free-food fraud this afternoon at the federal courthouse in downtown Minneapolis.
Artan is defendant No. 8 (out of 80, overall) in the case, part of the Safari Restaurant group. He pled guilty in the case back in June 2025, becoming the 46th defendant convicted in the scandal, a figure which is now up to 69. Along with four others from the Safari Restaurant group, Artan was one of the “5 A’s” who purchased a restaurant property in Brooklyn Park with their ill-gotten gains.
Prosecutors are recommending a sentence of 3-and-a-half years (41 months) in prison. Defense attorneys are requesting a sentence of less than three years of probation only.
It’s not clear how much Artan personally benefitted from the scheme, with the figure falling somewhere between $205,000 and $666,000.
Court records indicate that Artan was born in Somalia and arrived in the United States in 2006.
