Derrick John Thompson, son of the former state representative John Derrick Thompson, had his 3rd-degree murder trial postponed, again, this time until late May.

He is accused of killing five young women in a horror car crash with his rented Cadillac Escalade near Lake Street in south Minneapolis back in June 2023.

The May 27 trial would come nearly two full years after the crash. The most recent trial start date was supposed to have been in February, but it was postponed earlier this month.

Also earlier this month, a state judge denied Thompson’s efforts to dismiss the more serious charges against him. In denying the motion, the judge noted the following from the night in question:

As for remorse, the judge also noted:

Thompson was convicted last October on federal gun and drug charges related to the June 2023 car crash. No sentencing date has been set in that case.
