Sentencing was today in the case of that horror June 2023 car crash that killed five young women off Lake Street in south Minneapolis. KSTP reports,
Derrick Thompson gets over 58 years for crash that killed 5 women in Minneapolis.
Of course, in the twisted math used by the state of Minnesota, Thompson will serve at most half that amount behind bars. He was given credit for time served for the past two years that he has been in custody. He is still awaiting sentencing on federal drug and gun charges arising from the same June 2023 incident.
Thompson is famously the son of former state Rep. John Derrick Thompson (DFL-St. Paul).
For the first time ever, Thompson admitted that he was behind the wheel of the rented Cadillac Escalade that night. Previously, he tried to blame the crash on his brother, Damarco Thompson, who testified against him at trial.
The Minnesota Star Tribune account included this detail,
Thompson spoke for the first time publicly about the 2023 crash before receiving his sentence, begging for mercy and saying he never wanted to go to trial but had no choice.
No choice? He could have pled guilty. He could have taken the plea deal he was offered. He chose not to.
This is the 21st time I have written about Derrick. I hope it will be the last.
